YUM Awards 2011

The York Sport Show is YSTV’s sporting programme, which covers all types of sport, no matter what the weather, normally with only one camera person filming segments of up to 15 matches of the Wednesday’s sporting fixture every week. Sports covered include netball, badminton, hockey, squash, tennis, football, fencing, rugby, lacrosse and ultimate Frisbee. 

One editor condenses all of the footage into summary segments for a 30 minute show, presented by Natalie Montezuma and Jake Farrell, which brings sports to the wider University by taking the York Sport sofa around campus and the sports fields to record the presenters’ links. The show also regularly features BUCS updates, news on up-coming matches, results, and key details about what happened in the matches and how that may impact on the team as a whole.

As well as covering the main-stream sporting events, the York Sport show also includes special features. This has included Sports President Sam Asfahani taking part in Pole Exercise Club for Children in Need, a special report on a Quidditch match which was raising money for RAG and a summary of the rules of fencing alongside slow motion footage.

Gaining up to 350 hits per show, The York Sport Show has rejuvenated interest in match coverage, and lead to important connections with the Student’s Union, and sports teams. This ensures that matches are covered in as much detail as possible, and that student’s can engage more with University sport.

report informed the viewer of all the information they needed from one of the most important debates in union policy in the last 3 years. It focuses on the debate about whether York should remain part of the NUS, and also includes the other important motions in the Union General Meeting (UGM).

The additional external interviews were filmed during the day before the evening debate, with interviews from representatives of both sides of the argument. The debate was edited to enable the viewer to witness the full arguments as if they were at the debate.

All footage was immediately captured and edited after the end of the debate, with the report going online the same night.

The quick turnaround meant the report was online before voting on the referendum opened, and before both other student newspaper articles. Consequently, the report was the primary source of information for students that wanted to know what happened.

Best Debate: NUS Affiliation

Michael Miller presents a special feature about Remembrance Day, the history, the meaning, and the importance. This piece was produced for an episode of The York Link which was broadcast live on Remembrance Day.

Produced by Mark Friend and Simon Harris, Man Man is a comedy show about superhero Man Man, and episode 2 The X-Men Factor, sees him try to overcome his nemesis Mega Pimp with the help of Visible Boy.

In every episode of The York Link, reporters go behind the scenes of a different society. The York Link spoof was made for YSTV's Children in Need show, and goes 'behind the scenes' of YSTV.

Best Satire - The York Link Spoof

The Best Broadcaster piece was submitted for the student TV awards 2011 (NaSTA).  This won the highly commended Best Broadcaster award, naming YSTV the second best Student TV Station in the UK, gaining the same marks as the winner. Judged by top media representatives, the comments were:

‘Large variety of programming of great relevance to their audience. Intelligent, innovative use of social media, and a widening of the station's influence made for a very positive year.’ Graham Little – Freelance Broadcaster (BBC/RTE/SKYSPORTS)

It was painstakingly edited together to represent all that is best about YSTV from across the year and the hard work and effort that goes into producing quality television on a very limited budget.   This is by far the biggest achievement YSTV has had across the past year, and since 2006 when this was last achieved. It has established YSTV incredibly well for the next year, where the goal is to build on such a success and be named the best student television station in the UK.

Alexander Prowse has produced, presented and edited a number of different reports for YSTV most recently coverage of Deputy Labour Leader Harriet Harman's visit to York, featuring an exclusive interview. NUS affiliation coverage including interviews with key members of the NUS and the example shown here of his report on the annual RAG parade.

Alexander's reporting style stretches across a number of different areas. When interviewing official candidates he can be formal, respectful and ask important questions. In the example here he reports as part of the event, really getting involved in the enthusiasm of the event and getting in touch with a number of key players and parts of the day.

Michael Miller is a regular reporter for YSTV, both with his reports for YSTV Report’s, and his specials for The York Link. He presents sensitive reports, on topics such as Remembrance Day, the history behind it and the importance of it now, to student centred reports on reactions to the Student’s Union elections, and more light hearted events.

The York Carnival report shown here is indicative of Michael’s reporting style, getting involved in the student events to really represent the feel of the news. Not just reporting on it, but genuinely being present and involved.

Sanat Misra is a relatively new reporter to YSTV, but has really thrown his all into the news aspect of YSTV Report’s.  He takes a central role in the events he reports on, often producing and scripting the content himself. The work he puts into the reports shine through. 

He has worked on a number of different reports, presenting most recently a piece on the history of the Roses tournament, as well as an insight into the Student Arm’s Protest, which is shown here.


Best News Contributor - Sanat Misra

Steven Perring is a frequent news contributor to YSTV, focusing in particular on historical events and capturing the essence of the University and student opinions on main events. He often acts as historical correspondent giving much needed grounding for a number of reports, including on the History of Roses, the history behind Remembrance Day, and his recent reports recreating archived footage of York. Steven has also reported on a number of key issues, such as the student union elections.

The report shown here shows Steve at the National Railway Museum reporting on the exhibition of the Flying Scotsman, evidencing his knowledge of the past, and how that directly evidences the present, for news relevant to both students and the wider community.

Newsrind is a satirical news show that looks at campus news from a unique standpoint. It is produced in collaboration with The Lemon Press. This is the promotional video, which gives the viewer a taste of what is to come in the series.

A lower third overlay graphic for on demand and live show sports footage. Specifically, this graphic was made for Roses 2011 coverage - the largest inter-varsity sports tournament in Europe, between York and Lancaster

I was especially pleased with the 3D effect given to the two logos (York Sport and Lancaster University Student's Union), which meant there was constant movement in the graphic rather than just a boring still overlay.

This entry is just a template for producers and graphic ops to then use. When used alongside footage, the sport would change in the "enter sport here" and the score would change with that the score is. It was designed with simplicity for producers at the heart of it.

YSTV got the exclusive at the Summer Ball that Ndubz had cancelled an hour before they were due to perform. Here, we have a selection of vox pops from the graduating third years about their reactions to the band pulling out at the last minute.

This is a closing VT for a live show of the closing ceremony of Roses 2011, the largest inter-varsity sporting tournament in Europe. 

The short video sums up the 4 day tournament with some footage of some of the sports and the points each teams got. It wasn't able to include all sports featured as there simply wasn't enough time to capture, edit, and export together sports that had only been filmed on the day.

Hopefully it gives a good overview of the tournament!

Best Sports - Roses 2011 montage

Roses 2011 saw one of the most extensive and ambitious event coverage of the year, with more events and more sports covered than ever before. This included sending a team to Sheffield for a special report on the snow-sports events for the first time ever, alongside footage from water-polo and swimming. This is particularly important as very few students can attend such events, so bringing the outside sports to the masses was a significant achievement.

YSTV produced 3 live shows on the Friday, 4 on the Saturday and a unique live show from Central Hall balcony on the Sunday before linking directly to live coverage of the entire closing ceremony. YSTV also produced multi camera coverage of the opening ceremony and rugby match at Huntingdon Stadium, which saw our coverage broadcast on multiple screens throughout the bars and Hospitality Suites across the stadium as the event happened.

YSTV also worked hard to accommodate LUTube.tv, Lancaster’s student television station. Working hard with teams constantly filming, editing, reporting on all of the major sports and many more besides. This also facilitated the production of a further live show from Lancaster, with members of the team working hard to get edited packages and footage over. This highlighted the importance of the event coverage. As the largest inter-varsity sporting tournament in the country, students from both Universities watched YSTV’s shows and features.

Special reports were made on the history of Roses, anticipation of the main rugby match, interviews with Student’s Union sports presidents from both Universities, team captain catch-ups, rules of alternative sports, the atmosphere of the event, and how students were enjoying the weekend.

YSTV also achieved live link ups to the main sports fields including interviews with sports teams, media representatives, and Students Union representatives. Aside from the main camera work, editing and reporting done across this event, YSTV had a special website, roses2011.com to keep viewers up to date with the scores and the alternative media coverage along with a purpose made Roses clock for the live stream whilst live shows were not being broadcast.
