Many people do not realise that a huge number of the nation’s favourite sweets and chocolate come from York, including the colourful fruit pastilles Rowntree’s are best known for. However, little attention has been paid to Joseph as the great forward-thinker and philanthropist he was, demonstrated by a legacy which still survives 150 years later.
